Although the Christian is a new creation, he still lives in a body of death.  Indwelling sin is real and active.  Paul let's us in on the struggle that has occured within his own life. His new life in the Spirit is willing, but his flesh is weak.

Paul is leading us to Romans 8:1, where he will declare, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus."  He gives himself as an example of the battle occuring in the life of the progressively sanctified Christian. A great lesson and encouragment for believers.

The New Way of the Spirit

The Christian is no longer bound to law keeping for the sake of righteousness.  Just like a woman is no longer bound to her husband after his death, the Christian has been freed. He now walks in a new way.  He walks in accord to the Spirit dwelling within.
